Notes for Charles Bingham Penrose VAN PELT

Charles Bingham Penrose Van Pelt, 80, a retired lawyer who specialized in probate law and estate planning, died of heart failure Jan. 2 at John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Atlantis, Fla.
He lived in Radnor.
Mr. Van Pelt worked at firms in New York and as in-house counsel to corporations before joining the law firm of Hepburn, Ross, Willcox & Putnam, now Hepburn Willcox, Hamilton & Putnam in Center City. He remained with the firm for more than 20 years before retiring in 1987.
A Harvard University alumnus, Mr. Van Pelt was a member of the 1944 graduating class but finished his studies a year early as part of an accelerated World War II officer's training program. He then joined the Army, working in military intelligence in the Pacific Theater and earning the rank of captain.
After the war, Mr. Van Pelt earned a degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He joined the firm of Shearman & Sterling in New York and worked as in-house counsel for Chesapeake Industries, also in New York. Mr. Van Pelt then returned to Philadelphia to be legal counsel for Fidelity Bank & Trust Co. He became a partner at Hepburn, Ross, Willcox & Putnam in the mid-1960s.
Mr. Van Pelt served as chairman of the board of St. Christopher's Hospital and was treasurer of the Independence Hall Association of Philadelphia. He was a member of the State in Schuylkill and the Rabbit men's clubs, and served on the vestry of the Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr, where he also served as rector's warden.
He was a relative of St. Katharine Drexel and attended her canonization in Rome in October 2000.
Mr. Van Pelt had been married to Jane Eger Van Pelt since 1976.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Van Pelt is survived by daughters Abby Ann Van Pelt and Juliet Evelyn Eger Van Pelt; sons Peter T. and Guy F.C.; and two sisters.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Church of the Redeemer, 250 Pennswood Rd., Bryn Mawr. Burial is prior to the service at 10:30 a.m. in the church cemetery.
