Notes for Adele Goodwyn GRIFFIN

Adele G. Sands, 89, of Gladwyne, former headmistress of Agnes Irwin School, died Sept. 30 at Waverly Heights in Gladwyne.
Born in Swarthmore, she moved with her family to Wawa in 1922.
She began her earliest association with the Agnes Irwin School as a student. She then attended Vassar College and received an M.A. in English literature from Villanova University. She taught middle and upper school English.
Mrs. Sands returned to education after raising seven children as head of the Agnes Irwin Middle School and later as associate headmistress.
In 1985, Mrs. Sands was appointed head of school and upon her 1989 retirement, served as interim head at the Hathaway Brown School of Cleveland, Ohio.
During her tenure at Agnes Irwin, she served on several school boards, including Sacred Heart, Woodlynde School and Springside School. She also was chairwoman of the board of Sleighton Farms, overseeing its merger with Elwyn School.
In 1985, the Agnes Irwin School dedicated its new Sands Technology Center as a tribute to her recognition of the significance of technology.
Students remember Mrs. Sands for her charm, grace, gentle laugh and razor-sharp mind. One wrote in a yearbook, “She provided us with a master role model: mother, administrator, advisor and friend. She is our head but will always remain in our hearts.”
She was daughter of the late Frank H. Griffin and Priscilla Goodwyn Griffin and sister of the late Priscilla Shaffer.
Mrs. Sands was widow of William Logan MacCoy and James Sands.
Survivors: Brothers, Hastings, Tyler; children, Marguerite Borden, Priscilla, James, William, Elizabeth, Adele and Geoffrey Sands; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Service and burial: Private.
