George J. Durfey Sr., spent most of his quiet, unassuming life in Virginia. Born in Williamsburg, he married in Waterford and died in Leesburg. Along the way, he spent World War I as a civil engineer in Europe, then continued the work near Chicago. Moving back to Virginia after his first wife's death, he became mayor of Leesburg. One son rose to the rank of rear admiral in the Coast Guard, while the other quietly tended his stepmother for 10 years in the family home until she died. His daughter-in-law has been a teacher all her life. He has three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
