Notes for Donald P. GARRETT

Wednesday, December 17, 2008 6:08 AM EST

Donald P. Garrett of West Chester passed away on Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, after a long and courageously fought battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 73 years old.
He was predeceased by his parents, Philip C. Garrett and Mary Todd Johnson Garrett; and a sister, Shirley Todd Garrett of Mt. Washington, Mass.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Suzanne M. Garrett; a daughter, Rebecca Garrett-Brown (Arthur); a son, Christian Fueller Garrett (Tara); and another daughter, Gabrielle M. Falcone (Joseph); four grandchildren, Nicholas Huntoon, Alexander S. Brown, Shannon Todd Garrett and Caroline Carney Garrett. He is also survived by a brother, Dr. Philip C. Garrett (Judy) of Mt. Washington, Mass.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mr. Garrett attended West Chester Friends School, Wilmington Friends School and Cornell University, class of 1957, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree. He attended the School of Agriculture at Cornell and majored in ornithology (the love of birds was to be a lifelong passion and he never tired of watching or feeding them).
Mr. Garrett was also a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard for six years.
After his parents tired of the small clothing store they ran with friends in West Chester, they convinced Don to give it a try. So he built a new shop on South High Street and opened it in 1960. His mother had chosen the name "Cross Country Shop" and before his illness overtook him, he opened six more specialty clothing shops in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey.
His wife, Suzanne, worked with him from 1975 until the closing in 1990. He was named Retailer of the Year in 1977 by the West Chester Business and Professional Association.
Don loved traveling and he and his wife saw much of the United States, the Caribbean and their special "piece of paradise" in Maui, Hawaii, where they wintered for 25 years.
Don was an active environmentalist and conservationist. He was a member of the Brandywine Conservancy, The Brandywine Heritage Society and The Brandywine Valley Association.
He served six years on the East Bradford Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission while he was a resident of the area.
He was a member at large of the West Chester Lions Club until his death.
Don was an avid tennis player and enjoyed playing both singles and doubles with his "early bird" group. He won many trophies and was known for his "chop" shot. He also played as a member of the Radley Run Country Club.
He loved gardening, both flowers and vegetables, and was very successful at whatever he tried. Fishing was another interest and he was most happy catching "catfish" in Georgia with friends.
He came from a long line of "card sharks" and many hours were spent playing with his family and grandchildren.
Don's family had purchased land in the Berkshire Mountains and the "Garrett Clan" enjoyed summering in their cottages on Mt. Washington, Mass., swimming in Lee Pond, hiking Race Mountain and picking blueberries. Happily, his children and grandchildren carry on the tradition and can't wait for that "Mountain Top" day!
A memorial service will be held in August at The Church of Christ in Mt. Washington, Mass.
Burial will be in Cross Roads Cemetery, also in Mt. Washington, Mass.
