Deceased Name: ELIZABETH BATTLES NEWLIN
ELIZABETH BATTLES NEWLIN, 92, of Wayne, a community leader active in the restoration of Newlin's Mill in Concordville, died Saturday of lung cancer at her home, Sunny High.
Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Newlin graduated in 1921 from the Agnes Irwin School. She later served as president of the school's board of directors. She also was a former president of the Pennsylvania chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames.
Active as a volunteer at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, she endowed a chair of pediatric otolaryngology there in honor of her husband, E. Mortimer Newlin, who died in 1977.
Her favorite project was the restoration of the Newlin gristmill, which was built in 1704. She was active in stocking the miller's house with period furniture. For seven years, she was president of the Nicholas Newlin Foundation, which oversees the operation of the 150-acre historic and nature park.
She loved travel. When in her 80s, she went alone to visit three granddaughters abroad, in Rome, Athens and Budapest. She visited Alaska two years ago, and went parasailing in Boca Grande, Fla., on her 91st birthday.
Survivors: a daughter, Lucy Bell Sellers; a son, William V.P. Newlin; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services: today at 2 p.m., Old St. David's Church, 763 St. David's Rd., Radnor.
