Mr. Snowden, a former longtime resident of Lake Oswego, had suffered a long illness.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Christ Episcopal Church in Lake Oswego.
Mr. Snowden was born May 2, 1933, in Philadelphia. He was educated at Chestnut Hill Academy in that city and at the St. Georges School in Newport, R.I. He attended Temple University.
He began his journalism career as an 18-year-old seaman in the U.S. Navy, serving as editor of the ship's newspaper aboard the USS Coral Sea. When he returned to Philadelphia in the 1950s, he worked as a reporter for Conshohocken Recorder and the Norristown Times Herald. In 1961, he became a copy editor at the Allentown Morning Call in Allentown, Pa., and a year later, he became a copy editor for the Oregon Journal in Portland. He was named news editor of the Oregon Journal in 1977.
When the Journal merged with The Oregonian in 1982, Mr. Snowden became a deputy news editor of the combined paper and retired from that position in 1986.
In 1969, Mr. Snowden was elected a member of Sigma Delta Chi, the national professional organization for journalists.
Retirement allowed him to pursue his passion for history and preservation.
A favorite project was buying and preserving the Lake Oswego Odd Fellows Hall, saving it from demolition. The building now is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Mr. Snowden and his wife also bought and remodeled older homes.
Mr. Snowden is survived by his wife of 40 years, the former Juliana Randolph Wood; son, Richard Wood Snowden of Philadelphia; daughters, Virginia Packard Snowden of Wilsonville and Jocelyn Leigh Snowden of Portland; sister, Joan Packard Snowden of Philadelphia; and a granddaughter, Hannah McLean Snowden.
