Notes for Westley Butler DAVIS
Westley Butler Davis, 82, formerly of West Chester, a retired United Way executive and a tennis champion, died of prostate cancer Tuesday at Simpson Meadows in Downingtown.
A native of Clearfield, Pa., Mr. Davis served in the Air Force in occupied Japan after World War II.
He attended Pennsylvania State University for three years before managing a W.T. Grant Co. store in Clearfield. He moved to West Chester in 1964 to manage the Grant's store there, and later managed Mosteller's Inc. there and Lipkin's Furniture in Coatesville. From 1980 until he retired in 1995, he was executive director of the United Way of West Chester.
Mr. Davis served on the board of the West Chester YMCA and on the West Chester Borough Civil Service Commission, and was a longtime member of the West Chester Lions Club. He was a Mason and was active with the Henderson High School DECA Program, mentoring students.
A lifelong tennis player, Mr. Davis was honored as West Chester tennis commissioner in 2001 for his involvement in the construction of two tennis courts in the borough and the establishment of a senior tennis league in West Chester in the 1980s.
He told a reporter in 1991 that he organized the league in response to friends his age's complaining they couldn't find anyone to play with.
Mr. Davis also helped organize the first Chester County Senior Games in 1983 and later competed in the games, winning first-place ribbons in tennis, hot-shot basketball, and table tennis. He won seven Pennsylvania Senior Games tennis doubles titles and won a National Senior Games tennis title in 1991.
He played despite aches and pains. "I look like a mummy because I wear so many braces," he told a reporter, "but I'm determined." In 1996, Mr. Davis was one of the West Chester runners who carried the Olympic torch for a stretch on its way to the Atlanta Games.
Mr. Davis was assistant coach for the Henderson girls' tennis team until last year, his son Mike said.
In addition to his son, he is survived by son Gerry; a brother; and five grandchildren. His wife of 46 years, Lois Davis, died in 2002.
A funeral service will be at 3:30 p.m. today at West Chester United Methodist Church, 129 S. High St.
Donations may be made to West Chester Henderson Girls' Tennis Team, 400 Montgomery Ave., West Chester, Pa. 19380.
