Notes for Ruth MARTIN
Ruth Martin Ralston, 81, formerly of Lansdowne, a retired pharmacist, died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease Thursday at Riddle Village in Media.
Mrs. Ralston grew up with eight siblings in Chester County and graduated from Avon Grove High School in West Grove. She earned a bachelor's degree from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, now the University of the Sciences, and then was a pharmacist at Thomas Jefferson University Medical School.
In 1950, she married William G. Ralston Jr., and stayed home while raising their children. In 1972 she returned to work at the outpatient pharmacy at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She retired in 1987.
Mrs. Ralston was active in her children's schools, was a member of the Twentieth Century Club in Lansdowne, and was a Meals on Wheels volunteer. She enjoyed bridge and reading.
A seamstress, she made her own and her daughter's clothing for years and was an accomplished quilter and needlecrafter, her daughter, Joanne Brown, said. Recently she knitted squares for baby blankets with a sewing club at Riddle Village.
In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Ralston is survived by a son, Donald; four brothers; two sisters; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Garden Church, Lansdowne and Stratford Avenues, Lansdowne, Pa. 19050, to which donations may be made; she was a member for 57 years. Friends may call from 10 a.m.
