The family of Annie Browning came to Rhode Island from Massachusetts in the 17th century to escape the persecution of the Quakers in Salem and other towns. She was educated in rural schools and at the Northfield Seminary for Girls in Mass. She was a member of the Wilburite branch of the Society of Friends.
