Notes for Marie Elizabeth DU PONT
Marie du P. Scarlett, a homemaker and ranch manager, died in her sleep Nov. 28 at her Annapolis home. She was 92.
Marie du Pont was born and raised in Wilmington, Del., and graduated in 1934 from Miss Hall's School in Pittsfield, Mass.
She was married the next year to J.P. Wade Levering, a Baltimore businessman, and the couple settled at Edgmont Farm in Dulaney Valley. They later divorced.
During World War II, she volunteered at Union Memorial Hospital and managed Edgmont Farm.
After the war, she was a longtime volunteer with the Children's Aid Society.
An accomplished horsewoman and show rider, Mrs. Scarlett enjoyed fox hunting and riding with the Elkridge-Harford Hunt Club and the Marlborough Hunt Club.
She also played golf and tennis and was an animal lover.
"In addition to horses, dogs and cats, at one time she owned two bobcats and a fox that she had found trapped in the wild," said her son, Ernest D. Levering of Reisterstown.
In 1959, she married Charles Edward Scarlett Jr., chairman of Ramsay, Scarlett & Co. Inc., the venerable Baltimore steamship agency whose predecessor company, Patterson, Ramsay & Co., was founded in 1880.
Mr. Scarlett died in 1997.
In addition to living at Whitehall, a historic Annapolis home built in 1752, Mrs. Scarlett purchased the H-V Ranch near Springerville, Ariz., a working cattle ranch, in 1964.
Mrs. Scarlett lived on her ranch four months a year and was active in its management until last month, her son said.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 10 at the Episcopal Christ Church Christiana Hundred, 501 E. Buck Road, Greenville, Del.
Also surviving are two stepsons, L. Landon Scarlett of El Macero, Calif., and Charles E. Scarlett of St. Louis; two stepdaughters, Kathleen S. Burnett and Patterson S. Swindell, both of Baltimore; two sisters, Carolyn Gibbons of Rye, N.Y., and Patricia du Pont of Elkton; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A daughter, Lee Levering Hensen, died several years ago.
