Notes for Marion Willoughby SPEAKMAN

PALM BEACH, Fla. - Marion "Chee" Speakman Mathews of Palm Beach died Saturday, May 15, 2004, in her home. She was 90.

Mrs. Mathews was born Aug. 17, 1913, in Belmont Hall, Smyrna, Del., daughter of the late Cummins E. and Marjorie W. Speakman.

She was dedicated to teaching and assisting children. For several years, she served as a teacher at Palm Beach Private Day School in Florida and Bentley School in New York City. She also became an assistant director during the summers at Boys Harbor Camp for underprivileged boys, in East Hampton, Long Island, N.Y. She read to children at the Crippled Children's Society on a regular basis until a few months after her 90th birthday.

When Mrs. Mathews retired in Palm Beach, she became an avid volunteer for charity organizations, especially those that aided young people. Memories of her openness, honesty, friendliness, and sense of humor will be treasured by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Daniel S. Holder in 1952; her second husband, Henderson Mathews in 1982; a brother, Cummins E. Speakman Jr. in 1990; and three stepchildren, Janet Fitchen, Richard Mathews, and Nancy Fitchen.

She is survived by two daughters, Anne Holder-Erdman of La Mesa, Calif. and Marion H. Straton of New York City; a son, Daniel S. Holder of Bal Harbour; a stepdaughter, Barbara Bonneaud of Rousset, France; a brother, Walter "Buzz" W. Speakman of Smyrna; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held privately in Belmont Hall, Smyrna.
