Notes for Elizabeth P. LUKENS

Elizabeth "Betty" Lukens Crothers, 102, (obit)
of Media, an accredited flower show judge and a descendant of one of the original Germantown settlers, died May 10 at Riddle Memorial Hospital.
Born in the Woodlyn section of Ridley Township, she attended Ridley Park High School and George School and received a degree from the Philadelphia School of Industrial Arts, now the Philadelphia University of the Arts. She lived in the Wallingford section of Nether Providence and Media.
She was a direct descendant of Jan Lukens, one of the 13 original settlers of Germantown. An important part of her early life was the time that she spent at her mother's family farm near Tallahassee, Fla.
Mrs. Crothers lectured on flower arranging at Longwood Gardens, many Philadelphia area garden clubs and in Williamsburg, Va. She was an Accredited Lifetime Federation Judge and a Garden Club of America Judge. She was a member of the Providence Garden Club, the Rose Tree Garden Club and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.
To promote interest in gardening and flowers, she initiated the Media Flower Show and an annual award is given in her name. She exhibited in the Philadelphia Flower Show for many years and regularly won awards, including a best in show.
Mrs. Crothers was one of those rare people who made nature and beauty such a wonderful part of her life that she made those around her want to share this interest.
Daughter of the late William Lukens and Lila Hollingsworth, she was the widow of Samuel Crothers. A daughter, Marion Crothers Kerr, also predeceased her.
Survivors: Daughter, Elizabeth Crothers Hawthorne son, Samuel Crothers.
Memorial Service: 2 p.m. June 15 at the Swarthmore Friends Meeting, 12 Whittier Place, Swarthmore.
