James Willie 'Big Daddy' Lukens Jr., 78, (obit)
Real estate agent, former pro football player James Willie "Big Daddy" Lukens Jr., 78, of Naples, Fla., a real estate agent, a former professional football player, died Oct. 21 in Naples, Fla. Born in Ridley Park, Mr. Lukens graduated from Swarthmore High School in 1943, where he was a standout athlete in football and track. After a one-year stay at Severn Academy in Maryland, Mr. Lukens entered officer training school at the University of Louisville on a Navy academic scholarship. In 1946, he earned a degree in electrical engineering and led the university's track team to the Kentucky Intercollegiate Conference Championship, where he took first in the high jump. Mr. Lukens then entered Washington and Lee University School of Law, on a football scholarship. He played three seasons and in 1948, as team captain, he was named an honorable mention All-American. He graduated Washington and Lee with a law degree in 1948 and was recently inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1949, Mr. Lukens played professional football with the Buffalo Bills. Later that summer, he set up the first beach volleyball court at Rehoboth Beach, Del., where he played for the next 50 years. Mr. Lukens was a real estate broker and a partner in Sweeney and Lukens Real Estate. He was vice-president of the Interstate Traveler's Service and president of Eddystone Investment Company. Survivors: Wife, Barbara Lukens of Naples; children, James W. Lukens III of Wernersville, William W. Lukens of Rockledge, Fla., Jennifer L. Labarre of Bethesda, Md. and Mary E. Lukens of Williamsburg, Va.; two grandchildren; three sisters, Phebe Guckes, Deborah Arnn and Wistar Mains. Memorial Service: 2 p.m. Nov. 16 at St. George's Episcopal Church, Rehoboth Beach, Del. Contributions: Alzheimer's Support Network, 660 Tamiami Trail, Suite 21, Naples, Fla. 34102. Arrangements: All Cremation Options in Naples.
