Notes for Henry Whelen LARGE

Henry W. Large, 94, who rode a straight track to the top of the Penn Central Railroad, died Thursday at his home in Blue Bell.
Except for one year when he served as president of the Wabash Railroad, Mr. Large spent his entire career with the Pennsylvania Railroad, starting in 1928 as a clerk in the passenger-traffic department and retiring in 1970 as executive vice president.
Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Large attended the Lawrenceville School and Princeton University, graduating in 1928, before becoming a railroad man.
He stopped at various posts and outposts as he made his way upward, working in Camden, Washington, Wilmington, Cincinnati and Chicago, before joining the Navy during World War II.
After his discharge, he went straight back to the Pennsylvania Railroad, and in 1945 was named its freight-traffic manager in Detroit.
He returned to Philadelphia in 1948 and became an assistant vice president in charge of traffic in 1953.
Ten years later, he was elected president of the Wabash Railroad, based in St. Louis. He ran that railroad for just about a year before it became part of the Norfolk & Western Railway Co. and he returned to the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1964.
In 1968, the Pennsylvania Railroad merged with the New York Central to form the Penn Central Railroad. It was then that Mr. Large was named an executive vice president.
Mr. Large was a member of many associations and organizations. He served on the boards of Pennsylvania Hospital, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and the Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce.
He was a member of First City Troop, the Philadelphia Club, and Sunnybrook Golf Club. He also was active in St. Thomas Church in Whitemarsh.
Mr. Large is survived by his wife of 67 years, Emily; a son, Henry; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
