Notes for Charles Edwin PENNOCK
BIOGRAPHY: Charles became a drummer and a boot black at the age of 13 and served until the close of the war. He then joined his sisters in CO but later returned to NY to attend his sister's grave and claim money due to him from the gov. With the funds he purchased an ox-drawn freight outfit and became a "bull-whacker." For 7 years he hauled freight back and forth between Fort Dodge, KS and Fort Laramie, WY. At times he traveled through Salt Lake City, UT and into NV. Finally, he took a load of Morman books to Salt Lake City, sold the freight outfit and bought himself a prospector's gold pan and supplies. Then he met Lydia Flowers and even tho her father called him a drifter, they married and he met the challenge. When Charles and Lydia married, they filed a claim on land near her father in Bellvue, CO. near Fort Collins. He established a fruit and seed nursery, The Pennock Nursery and Seed Company, and marketed the fruits that he had successfuly adapted to the region. His catalogs circulated both nationally and internationally. While he was developing his nursery he provided for his family by cutting railroad ties and construction of 23 miles of roadway for the railroad proposed route. The area he worked is still called PENNOCK PASS.
Charles is acknowledged in the 'History of Colorado Horticulture' and also in a book entitled 'Prominent Early Citizens of Colorado.' He was invited by the Chigago World's Fair Asso. to exhibit results of experiments in cultivation of western fruits. A self educated man, referred to in 'Bellvue's Burbank.' He "grew" a chair .(This info. from "Happy Hardships" written by his daughter-in-law, Iola Oglesby Pennock.
