Notes for Alexander Macomb WETHERILL

Captain Alexander Macomb Wetherill went into the United States service in the Coast Survey at the age of sixteen years, and was in that service two years. He was in a Philadelphia volunteer regiment in the United States Army for about the last six months of the war between the States. Some time after the close of the war between the States he received the appointment of Second Lieutenant in the United States Army in the Sixth Infantry, where he served for the balance of his life--in all of the Indian wars where this regiment participated, and was promoted for gallantry, and was finally made Captain in 1890. He was killed at the Battle of San Juan Hill, in the bloody charge which was made against the Spanish and their barbed-wire fortifications, leading the charge in command of Company A.
