Notes for William WETHERILL

14 March 1851, DELAWARE COUNTY REPUBLICAN:

THE WETHERILL DIVORCE CASE. - The application of Dr. WILLIAM WETHERILL, for a divorce, is still pending before our State Legislature. No man has ever exhibited a greater degree of weakness, or sunk more rapidly in public estimation that the
Doctor, since he has involved himself in this attempt to get rid of the partner of his bosom, by Legislative interference. It is to be hoped that he, and all others like him, who apply to the Legislature to legalize immorality, will be taught that divorce is not so easy of attainment that men can take wives with as much unconcern as they would purchase a horse, knowing, if they become dissatisfied, their bargain can be almost as easily unmade in the one case as in the other. Laws for divorce have ever been promotive of uneasiness, disagreement and crime. If no such laws existed, thousands of married persons whose lives have been made miserable through their action, would have crushed in the bud, the first grievance, which, under their influence, grew, and was dwelt upon and cherished, until it gave rise to a whole train of trifling vexations and complaints, that would have melted like dew drops before a knowledge of the fact that they must be cured or endured. All such laws are partial. Their operation tends generally to gratify the worst passions of man, at the expense of the peace of whole families, and with the certainty of throwing mildew and blight upon public morals, and weakening the strongest social bonds which united society, and render it worth enjoyment. Mrs.
ISABELLA WETHERILL has borne her husband fifteen children, twelve of whom are living. They all join with the mother in remonstrating against this attempt to legalize the immorality of Dr. Wetherill, and bring disgrace upon her and shame upon themselves. We are sure no honest man in either branch of our Legislature, can, for a moment, entertain any sympathy for an individual so lost to self respect, so forgetful of his obligations to her for whom he has sworn to forsake all others, and keep her so long as
both shall live, as to seek to violate all the Christian precepts concerning marriage, which the civilized world looks upon as the surest safeguard for the happiness of man and woman. (Courtesey of Stephanie Wright)
