Louise McIlhenny Roberts, 87, a horticulturist who helped make hospitals more comfortable, died of cancer Aug. 21 at Beaumont, a retirement community in Bryn Mawr.
Since 1938, Mrs. Roberts had served on the Board of Women Visitors at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and was a past chairwoman. Mrs. Roberts was a past president of the Weeders Garden Club in Philadelphia. She had helped design and install the club's entries for the Philadelphia Flower Show, and her flower arrangements often won ribbons at the annual event. She served on the board of the Garden Club of America and was a founding member of the club's Philadelphia committee, which researched and planted the medicinal garden at Pennsylvania Hospital.
Mrs. Roberts enjoyed travel, Philadelphia Orchestra concerts, bridge, birdwatching, and boating at her summer home on Mount Desert Island in Maine.
In addition to her husband of 66 years, she is survived by daughters Louise Johnson, Sydney Rockefeller, and Patricia; a brother; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A daughter, Selina Ottum, died in 1990.
