Brooke Roberts, 85, a vascular surgeon for 40 years at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, died Sunday of cancer at Beaumont, a retirement community in Bryn Mawr.
Dr. Roberts helped develop innovative surgical treatments for aortic aneurysms and obstructed femoral and carotid arteries and advocated the use of angioplasty as a less-invasive treatment for vascular disease. As a professor of surgery, he helped train two generations of medical students.
His son Thomas said his father was known for his warm, confident bedside manner, and for his technical excellence in the operating room.
When he retired in 1983, Dr. Roberts was chief of the division of vascular surgery at HUP and was director of the University of Pennsylvania's fellowship in peripheral vascular surgery. He continued to teach anatomy and worked in the hospital's surgery clinic for several years after his retirement. He served on the boards of Independence Blue Cross and of the Measey Foundation for the advancement of medical education until last year.
A surgical research laboratory at HUP was named for Dr. Roberts in 1985, and a surgical chair at Penn's medical school will be established in his name.
Dr. Roberts grew up in Bala Cynwyd on land granted to his family by William Penn.
After graduating from St. Paul's School in New Hampshire and Princeton University, he briefly attended the University of Pennsylvania law school before deciding that he wanted to be a doctor. In 1943 he graduated from Penn's medical school with the highest academic average in his class.
During World War II, he served in the Army Medical Corps in the United States and in Germany.
After his discharge, he completed a residency in general surgery at HUP and was encouraged to pursue a specialty in vascular surgery by Dr. I.S. Ravdin, who was chairman of the department of surgery.
Dr. Roberts was chairman of the Medical Board at HUP from 1969 to 1971 and served as acting chairman of the department of surgery from 1981 to 1983.
In 1982 he received the Strittmatter Award from the Philadelphia County Medical Society for his contribution to medicine in Philadelphia.
He enjoyed traveling, reading American history, sailing, and spending time at his vacation homes in Maine and Honduras.
He had been a longtime resident of Fort Washington before moving to Beaumont in 1996.
In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anna Ingersoll Roberts; sons Jared and Andrew; two brothers; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at St. Asaph's Episcopal Church, St. Asaph's and Conshohocken State Roads, Bala Cynwyd.
