Helen was the daughter of William Henry Fryer of England. She married J. Clifford Pemberton in 1862, the younger brother of Confederate General J. C. Pemberton. They had children: Helen Clifford Pemberton, Rebecca Clifford Pemberton Hare, Mary Augusta Pemberton Baker, John Pemberton, Augusta Pemberton Keller Ingham, and Frances Rawle Pemberton Dade. Helen was the maternal grandmother of the famous athlete Hobey Baker.
