Notes for Henry Middleton DRINKER

Henry M. Drinker, 79, a retired pediatrician who practiced for years in Chestnut Hill, died Wednesday of leukemia at Gwynedd Square Nursing Center in Lansdale. He had been a resident of the Springfield Retirement Residence in Wyndmoor.
Dr. Drinker was a well-known figure in Chestnut Hill because, as a partner in the Chestnut Hill Pediatric Group for 37 years, he cared for generations of children in that section of Philadelphia.
''Every time I went out on a date when I was growing up, the girl I went out with would be a patient of his, and so would her mother,'' said Dr. Drinker's son, Ned.
Dr. Drinker also cut a familiar figure because he often could be seen pedaling around the area on his bicycle. For years, he would bike the three miles or so from his home in neighboring Flourtown to his office. He continued to ride his bike to work as an older man after moving to Chestnut Hill, where he lived for about 20 years.
Dr. Drinker was a 1942 Princeton University graduate and earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
During his career, he was chief of pediatrics and head of the nursing department at Chestnut Hill Hospital. He also was a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
After retiring in 1989, Dr. Drinker continued to work three days a week caring for children at the Southern Home Services Group of South Philadelphia, a temporary home for troubled youth. He volunteered there until about three years ago, when he became too ill.
Dr. Drinker grew up in Jenkintown and attended prep school in Connecticut. While a student at the Kent School in Kent, Conn., he played ice hockey and was a member of the crew team. His love of the water - if not the mode of propulsion - lasted into his adulthood; he was an avid sailor and member of the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club in Beach Haven, N.J.
Besides his son Ned, Dr. Drinker is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marilyn; sons, Sandwith and John; a sister; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. tomorrow at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Church Road and Bethlehem Pike in Whitemarsh. Burial is private.
