James Emlen Sr., 78, of Ambler, a retired chemist and editor, died Saturday of complications from pneumonia at Ambler Rest Center.
Member of a prominent Philadelphia family, he grew up at Awbury, the Emlen estate in Germantown. The property is now an arboretum owned by the City of Philadelphia.
Mr. Emlen attended Germantown Friends School with 21 of his cousins and graduated from Choate, a preparatory school in Connecticut. He studied chemistry at Yale University.
For many years, before retiring in the 1970s, he was a chemist at Quaker Chemical Co. in Conshohocken. He was a member of the American Chemical Society for 50 years and the former editor of the Catalyst, the society's magazine.
Mr. Emlen was a former trustee of the Wagner Free Institute of Science in Philadelphia.
In 1958 he and his wife, Helene McNichol Emlen, opened the Candle Shop in Chestnut Hill. The shop, which they sold a few years later, is still in business.
In addition to his wife of 44 years, Mr. Emlen is survived by daughters Elizabeth, Sarah Besterman and Madeline Ivanovski; a son, James Jr.; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in the spring. Burial was private.
