Notes for Robert Lukens EMLEN

ROBERT LUKENS EMLEN, RETIRED STOCKBROKER, 81, Robert Lukens Emlen, 81, a retired Philadelphia businessman and stockbroker, died of leukemia Thursday at Kendal, a retirement community in Hanover, N.H. Mr. Emlen, a member of the Emlen family that settled in Philadelphia in 1684, was born in Germantown and was a graduate of Germantown Friends School and Dartmouth College. In 1955, after 10 years with IBM, he began the Emlen/Peterson Co., a manufacturers' representative for makers of electronic and aviation instruments. From 1962 to 1972, he was president of Aircraft Instruments Co.
In 1981, he joined the brokerage firm of Hopper Soliday, which has since merged with W.H. Newbold's Son & Co. He retired in 1989.
Mr. Emlen lived in Radnor for 42 years and was a former township commissioner., He moved with his wife, Cora Peabody Emlen, to Kendal at Hanover in 1991, exactly five years before his death.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his sons, George W., Robert P. and Nicholas R.; a daughter, Kate E. Chamberlin; a brother; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Norwich (Vt.) Congregational Church in November.
