W. L. VERLENDEN
PROMINENT DARBY BANKER and MANUFACTURER SUCCUMBS TO PNEUMONIA
Following a two-days illness from pneumonia, William Lane Verlenden, prominent banker, manufacturer and civic leader of Darby, died yesterday at his home, 16 Ridge avenue, in that borough. He was seventy-three years old.
Mr Verlenden was born at Avondale, near Swarthmore, moving with his parents at the age of two to Darby, where he maintained his residence for the remainder of his life.
He was founder, first and only president of the First National Bank of Darby; president of Verlenden Brothers, Inc., textile manufacturers; the Coosa Manufacturing Company, Alabama; the Standard Processing Co., Chattanooga, Tenn., cotton yarn manufacturer; and the Darby Home Protection Society, Darby Library Company; vice president of the Lansdowne Savings Fund and Trust Company; a director of the Cambridge Trust Company, Chester; an active golfer in the Country Club of Lansdowne, and a member of the Spring Haven Country Club and the Manufacturers Club of Philadelphia.
The funeral will be held at his home tomorrow at 3 P.M., with the Friends services. Mr. Verlenden is survived by two sons and four daughters: A. T. and J. S. Verlenden of Darby; Mrs. I. F. Paschall of Jenkintown, and the Misses Mary, Ruth and Susan Verlenden, of Darby.
