Notes for John Jr. VERLENDEN

John Verlenden or (Verlinden's) parents were John Verlenden and his wife Elizabeth Wood. His death notice says he was in the 47th year of his age. Source: Philadelphia Inquirer of 20 December 1866. John Verlenden's "estimated" birth year in the U.S. Census is 1820 with spelling of "Verlenden". He was buried on 20 December 1866. Source: Genealogical Society Of Pennsylvania online Burial Records - spelling of "Verlinden". He married his first wife Edith Lane, on 4 April 1847. Source: Rehoboth Methodist Church Records with the spelling of "Verlinden". She died along with twin babies while giving birth in 1856. Source: familysearch.org - Pensylvania, Philadelphia City Death Certificates, 1803-1915. Their children were to later use the spelling of "Verlenden" in their records.

John is buried in the same section and lot as his second wife Rebecca Boyd and their infant "son of John Verlenden" buried on 10 October 1863.

NOTE: First wife Edith Lane Verlenden No. 80522971 burial with picture of gravestone has been found by research of Find A Grave member John Cahill No. 48323555. Edith is also buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery.

Below from "A History Of Delaware County Pennsylvania" - 1914
John Verlenden was born and reared in Avondale, Delaware county Pennsylvania. Receiving his education in the public schools of his native county, he early decided upon an industrial career, established a business, and in time became known as one of largest cloth manufacturers of Pennsylvania. His record as a business man still remains with his immediate family, and he accumulated wealth through his acumen in matters which others overlooked, or failed to seize the opportunity when presented. Possessing money and influence, he was one of the foremost men of his day. He was a Whig until the organization of the Republican party, when he gave it his adherence. He held local offices, He married first Edith Lane daughter of Edward Lane, a carriage manufacturer; married second (as a widower) Rebecca Boyd.

Children of John and Edith (Lane) Verlenden: 1. William Lane, married Mary W. Serrill. 2. Enos who married Ellie S. Lewis. 3. Elizabeth, unmarried. 4. Sarah, married Charles Lloyd. (Note by C.Krueger - Also a set of twins that died with their mother Edith in childbirth.

Children by second marriage: 5. Charles Boyd Verlenden, married Sarah Smith. 6. Harry Verlenden, married Jessie _______. 7. Edith Verlenden, unmarried. 8. Child, died in infancy. (Note by C. Krueger -"son of John" buried on 10 October 1863 is buried in the same lot of graves as John and Rebecca. Death certificate lists his age as 9 days and born in Darby, Delaware Co., Pennsylvania. His parents are listed as John and Rebecca H. Verlinden.
