Joanna W. Lippincott Sorlien, 69, a teacher and volunteer who was instrumental in establishing the Gladwyne Montessori School, died last Thursday at her home in Wyndmoor.

In the early 1960s, Ms. Sorlien helped found the Children's House, now the Gladwyne Montessori School, and established a scholarship fund there for underprivileged children. Later she cofounded and taught at the Montessori Genesis II School in the Mantua section of Philadelphia.

She also taught at a Head Start center and taught homeless children at the Food for Life shelter in Philadelphia.

Ms. Sorlien was born in Philadelphia, great-granddaughter of the founder of the J.B. Lippincott publishing company. She graduated from the Springside School in Chestnut Hill and Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y., then earned a master's degree in French from Bryn Mawr College.

While in her 50s, she earned a master's degree in dance from Temple University.

In 1972, she bicycled across Yugoslavia with three of her four children, carrying her 4-year-old on a seat behind her.

Ms. Sorlien had been a volunteer for the Red Cross, Associated Services for the Blind, the Friends Service Committee, Keystone Hospice, and the Center for Creative Activities, where she was a board member for 15 years.

She is survived by daughters, Sandy Sorlien and Charlotte McLaughlin; sons, R. Eric and Christopher; two brothers; a sister; and three grandchildren.

A Quaker service will be held at 11 a.m. March 24 at Green Street Meeting, 45 W. School House Lane, Germantown. Burial was private.
