Philadelphia Inquirer, The (PA) - January 20, 1989
Deceased Name: ELSIE HIRST LIPPINCOTT, 88, ARTIST
Elsie Graham Hirst Lippincott, 88, an accomplished amateur artist and sportswoman who was active in charitable work, died Tuesday at the Clara Burke Nursing Home in Plymouth Meeting.
Mrs. Lippincott was "extremely active, energetic, well-rounded, passionate about family," said her son Barton, retired chairman of the publishing firm of J.B. Lippincott Co.
Mrs. Lippincott was the widow of Bertram Lippincott, whose grandfather founded the Philadelphia publishing firm of J.B. Lippincott Co. Bertram Lippincott, a vice president and editor at the firm, died in 1985.
The Lippincotts lived for four decades at Meadow Farm, a 70-acre estate in Penllyn. The family spent summers in Jamestown, R.I., on a small island in the middle of Narragansett Bay.
Mrs. Lippincott's father, Barton Cooke Hirst, was a noted professor of obstetrics at the University of Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Lippincott was born in Cape May, N.J., where her family was vacationing. She grew up near Rittenhouse Square in Center City, and attended the Madeira School, then located in Washington.
She was involved in charitable work on behalf of a number of institutions dedicated to disadvantaged children, the arts, music and horticulture, including the Southern Home for Destitute Children, now known as Southern Home Services; the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Berea College in Kentucky.
Mrs. Lippincott took up art as "a serious hobby" in the mid-1930s, Barton Lippincott said. She did oil painting and sculpture for the next four decades, he said.
"She did a marvelous St. Francis of Assisi, about 25 inches high in bronze," her son said. "I think that's her best work."
Mrs. Lippincott's athletic interests included tennis, golf and sailing, and she competed in those sports locally. "She collected a fair amount of silverware in each of those," Barton Lippincott said.
She is survived by her sons, Barton and Bertram Jr.; daughters, Elsie L. Chadwick and Joanna L. Sorlien; 14 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. tomorrow at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 22 E. Chestnut Hill Ave. in Chestnut Hill.
