Wise, John Sergeant (1846-1913) — of Virginia. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, December 27, 1846. Grandson of John Sergeant; son of Henry Alexander Wise; cousin of George Douglas Wise; brother of Richard Alsop Wise. Republican. Served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War; lawyer; U.S. District Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, 1882-83; U.S. Representative from Virginia at-large, 1883-85; candidate for Governor of Virginia, 1885. Died near Princess Anne, Somerset County, Md., May 12, 1913. Interment at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Va.
