Ada Lammott Haines, 98, devoted parent and teacher, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at Foxdale Retirement Village in State College.

Born on Sept. 17, 1903, in Germantown, Ind., she was a daughter of the late Ross and Gertrude Lammott.

She grew up in Indiana. raised as a member of the Religious Society of Friends, she was a graduate of Earlham College.

It was there she met Joseph Strattan Haines, whom she married on Feb. 27, 1926. He died in 1986.

She was a high school teacher and librarian, and taught courses in English, journalism, public speaking, and mathematics, including calculus, primarily in Indiana. She directed high school plays and was a 4-H club leader. She took great interest in the arts and frequently was a soloist with church choirs.

In retirement, she and her husband lived in Port St. Lucie, Fla., where she won numerous bowling trophies. She was an active member of the Eastern Star.

In 1986, following her husband's death, she moved to State College to be near her daughter's family.

She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Pennock, of State College; a son, Dr. Robert Haines, of Pasadena, Calif.; four sisters, Marjorie Hinesley, Rhea Readnour, Laurel Stine and Betty Stewart; two brothers, Ralph and Lowell; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Foxdale Village in State College.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Foxdale Community Fund in care of Foxdale Village, 500 E. Marylyn Ave., State College, PA 16801.
