Notes for Edward Hallowell Jr. WORTH
Edward Hallowell Worth, Jr. of Wilmington, DE and Vero Beach, FL, husband of 64 years to Elizabeth T. Worth, died on November 18, 2007 at age 90.
Mr. Worth, a life long member of the Religious Society of Friends, was born to Edward H. Worth and Anna Vail Merritt Worth in Philadelphia, PA and raised in Claymont, DE. He attended Wilmington Friends School and graduated from the Hill School, Pottstown, PA in 1935 and Swarthmore College in 1939. At Swarthmore, he was president of Phi Kappa Psi and played baseball. He met his wife to be, Betts, through his fraternity brother and teammate, Gordon Tapley. His professional and civic contributions began with the family business, Worth Steel Co. in Claymont, DE, where he became treasurer until the business was sold in 1951. Worth Steel Co. was started in 1848 in Coatesville, PA. He and his brothers, William and Richard, formed several businesses including Yorklyn Mushroom Co., Kennett Canning Co., Concord Real Estate and Spitz Labs, a leading manufacturer of planetariums eventually selling to McGraw Hill Co. Mr. Worth was on the board of Kingswood Community Center, trustee at Woodlawn and a member of Wilmington Friends Meeting. He was very proud of his Quaker heritage and his family's involvement with Swarthmore College and the current location of Wilmington Friends School. Ed was a dear and trusted friend who loved a good joke and a hearty laugh. He would happily roundout a golf foursome or be a fourth in tennis. Well known for his dry sense of humor and unflappable demeanor, "Steady Eddie" never let a quadruple bogey phase him. He was an avid Eagles and Phillies fan. Ed and Betts were members of the Wilmington Country Club in Delaware and John's Island Club in Vero Beach, FL.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Crowther and Anne Crowther, of England and brothers, William and Richard of West Chester, PA. He is survived by his wife, Betts; daughter, Joan Davidson of New Smyrna Beach, FL; son, E.H. Worth, III of Baltimore, MD; son, Bruce Worth of Vero Beach, FL; 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
