Richard Merritt Worth, 93, formerly of Chadds Ford, a retired business owner, died Monday at Kendal at Longwood, a Quaker retirement community in Kennett Square he helped found more than 35 years ago.
Mr. Worth grew up in Claymont, Del. He graduated from Hill School in Pottstown and attended Swarthmore College. During World War II, he served in the Army in Europe.
After his discharge, he worked for the steel company in Delaware his great-grandfather started in 1848. After selling the business in 1951, he and his brothers operated several small businesses, including a mushroom-canning operation and a company that produced projectors for planetariums.
Since 1948, Mr. Worth had been married to Sarah Edge Worth. The couple met at a dance she organized at West Chester Country Club.
In the early 1970s, he and his wife were members of a Quaker committee that developed Kendal at Longwood, and Mr. Worth was its first chairman of the board. He also served on the boards of Wilmington Friends School and Family Services of Chester County, and was a longtime member of the Wilmington Monthly Meeting.
He enjoyed golfing and traveling with his wife, and visiting friends.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Worth is survived by daughters Lark and Anna; a son, Richard Jr.; a brother; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Kendal at Longwood, 1109 Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square.

Richard M. Worth
Richard Merritt Worth, 93, died Monday, September 24, 2007, at Kendal at Longwood. He was the husband of Sarah Edge Worth with whom he shared 59 years of marriage.
Born in Coatesville, PA and raised in Claymont, DE, he was the son of Edward Hallowell Worth and Anna Vail Merritt Worth. He attended the Hill School in Pottstown and Swarthmore College before serving on the European Front with the U.S. Army during World War II. On his return, he worked in the family steel business, the Worth Steel Company in Claymont, DE, until it was sold in 1951. He and his brothers were the last members of the family to be in the iron and steel business started by their great-grandfather in 1848. He and his brothers then worked to help a variety of small businesses to grow. From its inception, Dick worked closely with his wife, Sally, to found Kendal at Longwood. He served as its first Board Chairman as well as in many other capacities over the years. A birthright member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), he was a member of Wilmington Monthly Meeting until moving to Kendal Meeting. He also served on the Wilmington Friends School Board and the board of Family Services of Chester County for many years.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his 3 children: Mildred C. Worth (Lark) wife of Fernando Guerrero, Richard M. Worth, Jr., husband of Mary E. Worth all of West Chester, PA, and Anna E. Worth, wife of Robert L. Bergman of Shaftsbury, VT; and 6 grandchildren, Clare E. Worth, Daniel M. Worth, Thomas E. Worth, Eliza C. Worth, Robert L. Bergman, Jr. (Bo) and his wife, Megan M. Bergman, and Sarah Bergman. He is also survived by his brother, Edward H. Worth, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth T. Worth. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret W. Crowther, Anne W. Crowther, his brother William P. Worth, Jr., and grandson, Ian J. Worth.
A memorial service in the manner of Friends will be held at Kendal at Longwood on Saturday, September 29, at 2:00 pm. A private family burial is planned.
