Notes for George R. SMITH

George R. Smith, a member of the Society of Friends, who resided at 1311 Arch street, Philadelphia, died at his residence, on Wednesday, in the 95th year of his age. The deceased was born in Burlington, September, 1777. He went to Philadelphia in early life, and soon obtained a situation as clerk in a mercantile house. In 1800 he was appointed a clerk in the Bank of Pennsylvania, where he remained thirty years, during which he was promoted until he was made first teller of that institution, when he retired. He was for many years director of the Friends' Asylum fro the Insane, at Frankford, and other benevolent institutions in charge of the Society of Friends. He was one of three brothers who were early settlers in Burlington. Mr. Smith was much respected by a large number of the citizens of Philadelphia.
