Notes for William Brush Sr. SHIPPEN
William Brush Shippen Sr., 88, of Fairhaven, Sykesville, died Aug. 2, 2006, at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore.
Born Aug. 13, 1917, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Lloyd Parker Shippen and the late Florence Hawley Brush Shippen. He was the husband of the late Helen Ruth Sherlock Shippen whom he married on Oct. 30, 1943. He was the former husband of Jeanne Small Donahue Shippen of Sedona, Ariz.
He grew up in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., where he attended St. Albans. He graduated with an engineering degree from University of Virginia. He had been a thermal engineer with Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory for many years and also had been employed with The Martin Company. He had a lifelong passion for sailing and sailboat racing and was a charter member of the Baltimore City Yacht Association. He enjoyed family genealogy, computers and held a pilot’s license since college. He was a founding member of Glenelg Country School in Ellicott City and a founding member of the Maryland Alzheimer’s Association.
Surviving in addition to his former wife are sons and daughters-in-law Robert Sherlock Shippen and Christine Shippen of Mount Airy and William Brush Shippen Jr. and Lottie Shippen of Enfield, N.H., grandchildren Michael and Anne Shippen of Baltimore, William Brush Shippen III of Enfield, N.H., Joseph Temple of Claremont, N.H. and Shane Temple of South Ryegate, Vermont and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother Edward Shippen.
A memorial service was held at Fairhaven Chapel, Sykesville, with the Rev. Wayne Larson officiating. Interment is in St. John’s Cemetery, Ellicott City.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1850 York Rd., Suite D., Timonium, MD 21090 or to the Glenelg Country School, Office of Development, 12793 Folly Quarter Road, Ellicott City, MD 21042.
Arrangements were with Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, Sykesville.
