Richard I.G. Jones, lawyer, equestrian

Richard I.G. Jones, 68, of Doe Run, Chester County, a lawyer, equestrian and community activist, died Thursday of cancer at Christiana Hospital in Wilmington.
Mr. Jones was a litigator with the firm of Prickett, Jones & Elliott in Wilmington until his retirement in 2003.
For 30 years, he and his brother, Russell, owned Walnut Green Bloodstock, a horse breeding and sales operation in West Grove. The company was sold last year. Mr. Jones also oversaw the breeding interests at Christiana Stable, owned by his mother-in-law, Jane DuPont Lunger. The stable has produced many high-stakes race winners, including Go for the Wand, two-time winner of the Eclipse Award, a prestigious American thoroughbred horse-racing award.
Mr. Jones served on the board of Delaware Park; on the Breeders Cup Committee; and on the board of stewards of the Jockey Club. He was past president of the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association.
He grew up on his family's dairy farm in Westtown, graduated from the Haverford School, and earned a bachelor's degree from Yale University. After earning a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania, he was a lawyer in the Delaware Department of Justice for two years before practicing law in Wilmington.
Mr. Jones was a longtime Republican committeeman in Chester County and served on the Board of Supervisors in West Marlborough Township. He was on the board of Brandywine Hospital and the Chester County Community Foundation.
He enjoyed golf and fox hunting and was past president of Brandywine Polo Club and the Vicmead Hunt Club in Delaware. As chairman of Mr. Stewarts Cheshire Foxhounds in Unionville, he established a land-preservation fund.
In addition to his brother, Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ann Lunger Jones; sons Richard Jr., Tim, and Brett; a daughter, Braxton Lynch; and 11 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, 505 Buck Rd. East, Greenville, Del.
