Notes for Joseph BURR
In 1765 when Charles Read, Esq. purchased from Richard Wescoat half interest in several thousand acres of the Batsto Property, it was for the purpose of constructing an iron furnace on the Batsto River. In order to dam the river at this point he was required to receive permission to do this from Joseph Burr, who owned a saw mill at the head of the river. Burr agreed, as it is recorded: "-- hence the said Burr alledges that the Dam over the said Creek as petioned for by the said Charles Read, cannot be of any public or private detriment, but on the contrary greatly advantageous."
On April 27,1769 Joseph Burr bought a one eighth interest in the Batato iron works from Reuben Haines, a Philadelphia brewer, who had purchased it from John Wilson the day before. On October 13,1770 John Cox and his partner Charles Thompson bought Burr's interest for the sum of 250 pounds.
" Batsto was to become an important arsenal for Washington and his sorely beset Continental armies." -from" Iron in The Pines" pp121.
