Notes for Kenneth Orville MACFADDEN
Kenneth Orville MacFadden of Chestertown, MD died on Monday, May 16, 2011 at the Chester River Hospital Center. He was 65 years old.
Dr. MacFadden was born on September 5, 1945 in Philadelphia, PA. He was the son of the late Kenneth Pennel and Alice Whitehorn MacFadden. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in 1966 from Juniata College, a Ph.D. from Georgetown University in 1972 and he did postdoctoral work at the University of Calgary, studying Physical Chemistry in 1973. He worked at Stockton State College as an Assistant Professor from 1973 to 1975, at Air Products and Chemicals as a Manager of Research. He also worked at W.R. Grace & Co as Vice President of Research from 1984 to 1996 and was also Vice President of Research of Advanced Materials and Devices at Honeywell, Inc. from 1996 to 2004. Most recently, he worked as an Adjunct professor in Chemistry at Washington College, where he taught General Chemistry, Green Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry. During his career, he created seven patents in the field of battery technology and microfluidics.
Dr. MacFadden served on the Committee of Corporation Associates of the American Chemical Society and was a member of the National Research Council Panel for Chemical Science and Technology from 1992 to 1997. He served as Vice Chair and Chair of the panel. He was also Chair for the NRC Panel for NIST services in 2002 and Chair of the NRC Panel on Bullet Lead Analysis.
Dr. MacFadden was a member of the Chestertown Lions Club, the Chester River Yacht and Country Club and the Davis Creek Yacht Club. He enjoyed Sailing, Running, Biking, and reading.
In addition to his wife, Lois MacFadden, he is survived by, two daughters; Kira S. Kania and husband Vincent of Danville, VA and Michelle C. Hill and husband Mark of Mebane, NC, a sister; Linda Key of Littleton, CO and two grandchildren; Nathaniel Kania and Nicholas Kania.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 20, 2011 at 12:00 pm at the Presbyterian Church of Chestertown. Relatives and friends may call on Thursday, May 19, 2011 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home Chestertown, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society 1358 Parsons Road, Salisbury, MD 21801.
