Notes for Spencer PENROSE
Philanthropist, builder of the Broadmoor Hotel and Resort in west Colorado Springs. Visionary developer of the Pike's Peak Region in El Paso and Teller Counties, Colorado. A Harvard graduate and native of Philadelphia, Penrose arrived in Colorado in 1892 to join his fellow Philly native and business partner Charles L. Tutt. Penrose made his vast fortune in a series of successful mining and real estate ventures in Cripple Creek, Colorado and the Utah Copper Company (later known as Kennecott Copper). His wife, Julie Lewis Mc Millan, the daughter of a prominant Detroit politician, met Spencer in Colorado Springs where she remained following the death of her first husband, James Mc Millan, in 1902. Spencer and Julie were married in 1906, and the couple were instrumental in the planning and development of Colorado Springs, spearheading dynamic projects to beautify and promote the Pike's Peak Region. In addition to building the Broadmoor Hotel and Resort, the Penroses also built the Pike's Peak Highway and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Mr. and Mrs. Penrose were also major sponsors and contributors in the cultural and educational activities of the area, donating property where the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center now stands and establishing the El Pomar Foundation in 1937, in order to contribute to charitable and educational nonprofit organizations in the State of Colorado. There is also the Spencer Penrose Award - given annually to the nation's top coach by the American Hockey Coaches Association. (bio by: Malcolm Nicoll)
