Notes for Ann Elizabeth KAUFMAN
Ann K. Dilworth, 79, widow of former Mayor Richardson Dilworth, mother of Common Pleas Court Judge Louis G. Hill and an accomplished artist, died Monday at the Devon Manor Nursing Home in Devon.
Mrs. Dilworth was a staunch political campaigner for her husband, having taken part in seven election campaigns in 15 years. " Dick enjoys politics, and I enjoy being with Dick," she once explained.
" When he's doing a job, he gives it his all."
The same could be said of his wife, who was known for her tireless drive.
Once during a street-corner campaign for mayor in 1947, Mrs. Dilworth, cheerful but usually rather shy, struck a burly committeeman with her handbag when he made a disparaging remark about her husband.
Born Ann Elizabeth Kaufman on July 25, 1902, in Marquette, Mich., where her family had pioneer roots, she was one of eight children of a successful banker and financier. Her mother, Marie Young, was the daughter of Chicago financier Otto Young.
She was educated in Marquette and New York. In June 1923, she married Crawford Hill in Paris. The couple had two children, the late Marie H. Townsend and Judge Hill. The Hills were divorced in 1935, and she married Dilworth. They had two children, Deborah Newbold and Richardson Dilworth Jr.
Mrs. Dilworth was a pioneer in the rehabilitation of Society Hill. She and her husband built a Colonial-style house in Washington Square in 1957.
Mr. and Mrs. Dilworth were passengers on the Italian liner Andrea Doria when it was struck July 25, 1956, by the Swedish liner Stockholm off Nantucket Island. The Andrea Dorea sank, killing 51 people.
Mrs. Dilworth was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club, a former board member of the Settlement Music School and a former member of the Women's Board of the Academy of the Fine Arts.
In addition to Judge Hill, Mrs. Newbold and Dilworth, she is survived by a sister, Jane Boyce of Palm Beach, Fla.; four stepchildren, Patricia Lees and Ann Hackett both of Philadelphia, Brockie Dilworth of Chicago and Warden Dilworth of Groton, Mass.; and 13 grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Christ Church.
