Notes for Emily Chapman WOOD
Emily Chapman Wood, 76, of Haverford, former health-service president, volunteer and equestrienne, died of heart failure July 7 at the Quadrangle, a retirement community in Haverford.
Ms. Wood grew up in Gladwyne across the Schuylkill from Alan Wood Steel Co., which her family had established in Conshohocken in the early 1900s.
She graduated from the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr. After her marriage to Avery Andrews II in 1948, she raised their six children in Villanova, was active in fund-raising for the Shipley School and arts organizations, and took courses at the University of Pennsylvania. She eventually earned her bachelor's degree from Penn in 1981.
She and Andrews divorced, and in 1966, she married William Wadsworth, with whom she had a daughter. The couple lived in Geneseo, N.Y., where she helped manage his farms and was founding president of Livingston County Health Center. She was a regional organizer for the United States Pony Club and was an officer for a fox-hunting club.
When she and Wadsworth separated in the 1980s, she moved to Society Hill. They later divorced. After earning a master's degree in counseling and human relations from Villanova University, Ms. Wood was a part-time career counselor. She was a volunteer reading tutor and served on the board of Youth Service Inc., a Philadelphia social agency for at-risk children.
Her son Owen Andrews said she was a tireless telephoner and maintained connections worldwide with friends and family.
In addition to her son and former husbands, Ms. Wood is survived by sons Avery Andrews III and John Andrews; daughters Emily Nesvadba, Lucy Cummin, Marion Thorne and Martha Wadsworth; stepchildren Naomi Wadsworth, William Wadsworth and Craig Wadsworth; and 16 grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Church of the Redeemer, Pennswood and New Gulph Roads, Bryn Mawr.
