Notes for Gouverneur Jr. CADWALADER
Gouverneur Cadwalader Jr., 82, of Unionville, a retired Philadelphia bank executive who loved horses, farming and sailing, died Wednesday at Jennersville Regional Hospital in West Grove.
Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Cadwalader was a grandson of Anthony J. Drexel, financier and founder of Drexel University; nephew of St. Katharine Drexel; and great-great-grandson of Col. Lambert Cadwalader, an officer in the American Revolution who represented New Jersey at the Continental Congress.
Mr. Cadwalader attended Chestnut Hill Academy and St. George's School in Newport, R.I., before joining the Marine Corps and serving in the Pacific during World War II. He worked for Fidelity Bank for 40 years before retiring as an executive in 1986.
"He was a true, old-school Philadelphia gentleman," his son Anthony J. Drexel Cadwalader said.
He said that as much as his father loved the city and its culture, he also loved returning to his Chester County farm, where he enthusiastically tended the animals, mended fences, and cut the fields on his 1946 tractor.
"He loved farm life," said his son, who added that his father just recently had helped him dig fence-post holes at the farm.
Mr. Cadwalader was a member of the Corinthian Yacht Club, the Philadelphia Club, State of the Schuylkill, the Brook Club, and American Legion Post 491 in Kennett Square. He was a former treasurer of the Bryn Mawr Hound Show and the American Legion, and a former vestry member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Kennett Square.
In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife, Joan Hayden Cadwalader; sons Gouverneur 3d, Richard, Stephen, and R. Kent; and eight grandchildren.
A private graveside memorial service was held Monday at Woodland Cemetery in West Philadelphia, and a memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Sept. 15 at the Church of the Advent in Kennett Square.
