Notes for Bayard SHARP

WILMINGTON, Del. -- Bayard Sharp, avid thoroughbred breeder and owner and great-grandson of E.I. duPont, the founder of the DuPont Co., died Friday at his home in Wilmington, Del. He was 89.
Mr. Sharp is the father of Sarah Farish of London, England, and Versailles. Farish is the wife of Will Farish, the U.S. ambassador to Britain.
Mr. Sharp was a well-known breeder and owner who raced many outstanding horses, including Hannibal, Mississippi Mud and Dixieland Band.
He was a former chairman of The Blood Horse Inc., a member and steward of the Jockey Club, and a trustee emeritus of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association.
Mr. Sharp owned the Gasparilla Inn and Cottages on Gasparilla Island on the southwest coast of Florida.
He had been actively involved in the Republican Party in Delaware and nationally for a number of years.
He was a longtime friend and supporter of President George H.W. Bush, and served as chairman of the Delaware Committee for Bush's two presidential campaigns.
In addition to his daughter, Mr. Sharp is survived by four grandchildren, Mary Johnston of Houston, Texas; William Farish Jr. of Versailles; Laura Chadwick of Nashville; and Hillary Stratton of Houston; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Private services will be held.
