Notes for Caroline HALLOWELL
Caroline Hallowell Miller (1831-1905) followed in the footsteps of her father, Benjamin, as an educator; in 1858 she and husband Francis opened the boarding school Stanmore, across from today's Olney Theatre. In 1889 she organized the Women's Suffrage Association of Sandy Spring, stating "I have been an earnest advocate of the equality of women under the law ever since I was old enough to think." She became president of Woman's Suffrage of Maryland and spoke often at state and national conventions. Said Allan Farquhar at her funeral: "In conversation the brightest lights paled in her presence; she had wonderful dramatic power; her public addresses, when delivered in her own inimitable manner were marvels of eloquence."
