Notes for Philip PRICE
Philip Price, a leader in the Philadelphia legal community and former vice president of the Fairmount Park Commission, died Tuesday. He was 91 and lived in the Chestnut Hill section of the city.
From 1942 until his retirement in 1970, Price was a senior partner in the firm of Dechert Price & Rhoads, one of the nation's largest law firms.
After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1922, he practiced law with his father, Eli Kirk Price Jr., for a few years. He joined Barnes, Brinton & Biddle in 1928. Succeeding mergers resulted in his association with Dechert Price & Rhoads.
Price specialized in litigation. One of his early clients was the old Philadelphia Rapid Transit Co., predecessor to SEPTA. Later he became outside trial counsel for the Pennsylvania Railroad.
For many years, Price was a member of the Fairmount Park Commission, where he served as treasurer and vice president. From 1954 to 1969 he was president of the Fairmount Park Art Association.
His other civic and charitable associations included a term as president of the board of the Springside School in Chestnut Hill and service on the boards of Bennington College, Children's Hospital, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Committee of Seventy, the Preston Retreat and the Overbrook School for the Blind.
His active interest in the community was in keeping with a family heritage.
Price's great-grandfather, Eli Kirk Price, was a prominent Philadelphia legislator and lawyer who was largely responsible for the organization of the Fairmount Park Commission in 1867 and was instrumental in achieving city- county consolidation in 1854.
His father, Eli Jr., played a major role in persuading the city to finance construction of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Price had served as chairman of the Board of Governors of the Philadelphia Bar Association and its Committee of Censors. His interests also included the Society of Colonial Wars, the First Troop of the Philadelphia City Cavalry, the Philadelphia Club and The Rabbit.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, the former Sarah Meade Harrison; three daughters, Sarah Price Parker, Evelyn Price Scott and Nancy Price Hiestand; two sons, John S. and Philip Jr.; 17 grandchildren, 16 great- grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Price Hamilton.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Church, 22 E. Chestnut Hill Ave., Chestnut Hill.
