Notes for William Henry WINDER
War of 1812 Brigadier General. Army officer who was responsible for the defense of Washington, DC during the war. When the British invaded Maryland in the summer of 1814, he hastily scraped together forces to meet the threat. His forces were overwhelmed at the Battle of Bladensburg (August 24, 1814), and the British subsequently burned the Capital. Although General Winder was slow to meet the threat, he was hampered in his efforts to defend Washington by Secretary of War John Armstrong - who had opposed Winder's appointment - and was overruled by President James Madison.
