Notes for William Smith TOWNSEND

WILLIAM SMITH TOWNSEND was connected with the extension of the West Jersey R. R. to Cape May City. In 1866 he built the stone sea-wall at Cape May City, the first ever erected on the Jersey coast. His w., HANNAH S., was an amiable and philanthropic member of the Soc'y of Friends. "She had a kind word for the children, a sympathetic tear for the sad and afflicted, a wise word of counsel for the erring, and a quiet admonition to the passionate. She spread God's sunlight wherever she went, and through sunshine and shadow was always the same. Her father, HENRY LUDLAM, was devoted to scientific and literary pursuits, and established in large degree the plan of local education which later contributed to the free-school system of N. J." (See Ludiam Genealogy, p. 114.)
