Death Takes Calvin Philips, Ex-Broker
Calvin Philips, 93, retired real estate and investment broker, died last night in a nursing home. He suffered a stroke a month ago. Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock Monday in the Bonney Watson Chapel. Entombment will be in Acacia.
Mr. Philips was President of Calvin Philips & Co. before he retired in 1950. He came to Washington in 1891 from Philadelphia and first established a real restate and property management business in Tacoma. He later was appointed financial correspondent for Penn Mutual of Philadelphia.
Branch Established
Mr. Philips came to Seattle in 1914 after opening a mortgage and loan department for the insurance firm here. He later established a branch in Oakland, California and continued to expand his real estate business here.
During the First World War, Mr. Philips was State Treasurer of the Liberty Bond drive. He was an ardent bridge player, competing until he became ill. He had lived until recently at the Rainier Club.
Wife Dies in 1941
Mr. Philips was born in Green Bank, Delaware. He attended the George Preparatory School in Philadelphia. He was married to the former Katharine Thomas. Until her death in 1941 they lived at 1041 Summit Avenue North.
Surviving are four sons, John O., Richard T., and Calvin Jr., all of Seattle and James Philips of Oakland, California; a brother, Edwin Philips, Wilmington, Delaware; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Obituary furnished by a contributor who wishes to remain anonymous.
