Notes for Robert SHOEMAKER

He was merchant in Philadelphia for nearly 60 years, and at the time of his death was the oldest active druggist in the city, with one exception. His partners were his sons, Richard M., Thomas Earp, and Benjamin H., Jr. He was a trustee of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy since 1843, for many years its vice-president, and in 1894 the College conferred upon him the title of Master of Pharmacy. He was vice-president and later president of the Philadelphia Drug Exchange. He was one of the incorporators of the Consolidation National Bank, and a director from the time it was founded in 1855. He was a member of the fire Insurance Association, and of the Delaware Mutual Fire insurance Company, and president of the druggists' fire Insurance Company. He lived at Chelten Hills, Montgomery County, for more than 30 years prior to 1891, when he moved into the city. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Cheltenham, and was for 32 years accounting warden; he was for 15 years a director of the Cheltenham School district, the public school at Shoemakertown being named for him.
