Notes for Robert Pitfield III LOVETT
Robert Pitfield Lovett IV died Thursday, March 25, 2010, at Pennswood Village, Newtown. He was 93.
Bob was the beloved husband of Helen Fay Lovett. Born in Trenton, NJ, he was the son of the late Caroline Blackburn Lovett and Robert Pitfield Lovett III. He grew up in Fallsington, and resided for 43 years in Upper Makefield Township. Bob and Helen moved to Pennswood Village in 1993.
Bob was a lifelong Quaker who believed in peace and social justice. He was a conscientious objector during World War II, serving in the Civilian Public Service and the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, a geological survey team in the southwestern United States.
He was a self-employed cabinetmaker for 35 years, during which time he created a multitude of fine custom furniture pieces for customers and family. Bob also worked as a craftsman for 10 years in the studio of furniture designer George Nakashima. In addition to his furniture work, he built his own house and a number of outstanding buildings in the Nakashima compound. He leaves a legacy of fine craftsmanship and beauty in the many lovely things that he created.
Bob and Helen were married for 62 years. They loved to travel and spend time with family and friends. Bob was an avid and skilled gardener, a great reader, and a stamp collector. His Quaker beliefs remained evident throughout his life in his generosity, kind spirit and commitment to peace. He attended Newtown Friends Meeting for more than 40 years. More recently he attended Quaker Meeting at Pennswood Village.
In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his loving children, Robert Pitfield Lovett V and his partner, Ann Buckley, of Newtown, Laura Elizabeth Lovett of Larkspur, Calif., and Sarah Ann Lovett of New Paltz, N.Y.; his brother, William James Lovett and his wife, Elizabeth Sanger Lovett, of Visalia, Calif.; and his sister-in-law, Hazel Bean Lovett of Newtown. He was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Lovett Stewart; and his brothers, James Satterthwaite Lovett and Francis Lucas Lovett.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at Newtown Friends Meeting, 219 Court Street, Newtown.
