Notes for Roger SCATTERGOOD

Roger Scattergood, 89, a retired lawyer and city planner who also served as executive director of the Germantown Businessmen's Association, died of pneumonia Friday at Crosslands Retirement Community in Kennett Square.

Before moving to Crosslands 13 years ago, Mr. Scattergood had been a longtime resident of the Germantown section of Philadelphia.

After he retired as a city planner, he headed the Germantown Businessmen's Association, which worked to attract commercial development and new business to the neighborhood. He retired in 1981.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Scattergood graduated from Germantown Friends School before earning a bachelor of arts degree from Haverford College in 1934. He received a master's degree in history from Harvard University in 1935, a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1938, and a master's in city planning from Penn in 1958.

Mr. Scattergood practiced law for several firms, including Kidder, Peabody & Co. He also was a planner for the State of New Jersey for several years. He retired in 1977.

Mr. Scattergood was a member of several professional, political and civic organizations, including the Philadelphia and Pennsylvania Bar Associations, the World Affairs Council, the Philadelphia Committee on City Policy, and the Citizens Committee on City Planning.

He served on a number of boards, including Penn Charter School, Stapeley Hall, Germantown Settlement, Awbury Arboretum, and Haverford College. He was a member of Germantown Meeting.

Having climbed the Matterhorn as a young man, Mr. Scattergood maintained a lifelong interest in mountain climbing. He also enjoyed Scottish country dancing.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Elizabeth, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. March 16 at the Crosslands Retirement Community. Burial is private.
