Notes for Ellis Pusey COATES

ELLIS COATES, son of Warrick and Elinor Pusey Cooates, was born on his
father's farm in Londonderry Township south of Cochranville, in Februar
1804. He died in May, 1877, and is interred in Homeville Cemetery.
In 1835, before his marriage, he went with his brother, Warrick Jr., on
horseback to Niagara Falls, having some thrilling adventures in the
mountainous and the then unsettled parts of Pennsylvania. His journey took
nine days each way.
He married his first cousin, Abigail Coates, of East Caln Township and
they resided on their farm near Homeville, in Upper Oxford Township.
Ellis' walking stick was a hickory cane cut by Andrew Jackson from his
farm in Virginia and given to James Ross, who gave it to Ellis Coates. His
name is the first on the list of Charter members of The Octoraro Farmers Club.
